“The first large Brazilian hydroelectric plant effectively to launch carbon credits on the global market”
Santo Antônio Energia is celebrating certification by the United Nations (UN) that authorizes the Santo Antônio hydroelectric plant to join the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), making it the first large Brazilian hydroelectric plant effectively to launch carbon credits on the global market.
This UN accreditation demonstrates that the Santo Antônio hydroelectric plant is helping reduce carbon emissions. Estimates show that the plant’s energy output will generate the equivalent of 4 million metric tons in carbon credits per year.
By reducing carbon emissions and deploying social and environmental programs, the Santo Antônio hydroelectric plant is in line with the objectives of the Brazilian government’s policy on energy and the environment – such as the National Climate Change Policy. It is also an example of the Green Economy concept adopted by the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio + 20, held in 2012.
